Superheros and Social Justice: Mutants, superheroes and ordinary citizens who abandon their humanistic instincts to fight for justice. That’s what many people think of when reflecting on nostalgic memories of historic comic book series. But if you take a look beneath the facade of capes and gadgets, you may observe the author’s true intention, social justice and activism through art. Throughout contemporary history, comic books have taken an attention to social issues. Comic books and movies like March by John Lewis, Stan Lee’s X-Men, and even our most recent revamp of Black Panther use witty pop-culture references and flashy imagery to address issues like racism, ableism and sexism, in a way that is digestible to all.
