January Friday Jazz at the High Museum of Art

Mark your calendar for live jazz at the High, hosted by Jamal Ahmad from Jazz 91.9 WCLK, Atlanta’s jazz station! On the third Friday of every month, you’ll enjoy music, drinks, and art. Each month will feature a different style of jazz, from straight ahead to free jazz, bebop to swing, and more.

Seating for Friday Jazz opens at 6 p.m. It is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

January features the music of jazz vocalist Tony Hightower.

About Tony Hightower

Tony Hightower performing.

The son of prominent jazz vocalist Theresa Hightower, Tony Hightower had music ingrained into his experience from a young age. He regularly watched his mother perform, along with a wide range of other talented artists, which helped shape his own penchants for singing and arranging. Hightower’s musical expertise spans genres and has afforded him opportunities to create alongside such talents as Lionel Ritchie, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Outkast, Dottie Peoples, and Charlie Wilson.

Hightower’s latest release, The New Standard, is a nod to the sounds of big band and vocal jazz—a sonic bridge between contemporary and purist forms. He incorporated neat vocal styling, multipiece instrumentation, scat, and swing elements to maintain the integrity of jazz music’s deep, expansive, and historical roots. Enlisting HC3 and the Good Times Brass Band, Hightower reinterpreted four popular songs and arranged six original recordings, blurring the line between modern and classic jazz. Critically acclaimed musicians Freddy Cole and Wycliffe Gordon acknowledged Hightower’s ingenuity on The New Standard, with Cole providing musical guidance throughout its conception. The album was also put forth by veterans and major-label-backed artists as a candidate for the 2015 Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy nomination.
